ACAA, AustCham, ACYPI,and ACYA are back with Happy Hour round 2!This month we're excited to be hosting it in ATLAS COMMONS. They've opened up their awesome outdoor garden exclusively for us, with great drinks and free pass around snacks for all attendees. Come on down and bring your mates, see you there.

July Greetings!


With the nationwide increasing trend of career fairs tailored for overseas students the ACAA was pleased to support the 2017 Australia China Career Fair in Beijing and Shanghai in early July, as well as the 2017 Overseas Students Career Fair in Shanghai and Hong Kong in late July and early August.


Besides providing support to alumni events for the University of Tasmania and the University of Newcastle, we were delighted to engage with local alumni chapters of Australian universities by supporting events such as the Guangzhou Monash Alumni Gathering and One Night in 1920s – Global Alumni Event in Shanghai. In addition, we kickstarted the summer season with our Indoor Climbing Activity in Beijing.

The ACAA is very excited to be hosting the 9th Australia China Alumni Awards in Shanghai in November of this year! Once again, the Australia-China community reconvenes in Shanghai to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Australian alumni in China.


Nominations for the 2017 Australia China Alumni Awards opened on 1st July and will remain open until 31st August. Alumni are welcome to nominate him- or herself, or someone else who has made significant achievements in their work, life and/or service to the community service.

ACAA Beijing Indoor Climbing Activity



14th July 2017: 18 alumni joined us and accepted the challenge of indoor climbing! Although it was hard at the outset, our alumni started to develop a liking for  such an exciting and challenging sport as they overcame their own obstacles and made it to the top! 


  Exploring the future of work in Asia-Pacific

2017 UTS International Alumni Reception



Agility and adaptability to change are the key ‘soft skills’ required to succeed in an ever-changing workplace, UTS graduates heard at a series of panel discussions exploring the future of work across China and Hong Kong in June.


Hundreds of members of the UTS alumni community gathered at international receptions in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing to hear from some of our most innovative, creative and successful graduates, academics and industry leaders, who shared their insights, stories and advice on mastering the essential skills needed in the jobs of tomorrow.

Mr. Lawrence Lau

University of Southern Queensland/Deakin University Alumnus



Mr Lawrence Lau is the Founder and Executive Director of Yellow Sand Capital (Australia)and Yellow Sand Consulting (China, Singapore).  Prior to that he was the Head of Finance of Owens Corning Building Materials Asia Pacific and held various senior positions in KPMG Consulting, L’Oreal, Mary Kay and General Motors. 


Mr Lau graduated from the University of Southern Queensland in 1992 with a Bachelor of Business and gained his MBA in 2004 from Deakin University. He is a Fellow CPA (Aust) member and has over 25 years of experience in finance, corporate strategy, acquisition and consulting in the APA region.  His industrial experience spans manufacturing, consumer goods, advance materials and renewable energy. 


Mr Lau recently completed the International EMBA/MBA Cross Desert Challenge (60km) in June in the Wulanbuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia.  He also participated in the Asia Pacific Business Schools 2 day 42km Glacier Race in Siberia and the Asia Pacific Business Schools 3 day 70km Desert Race in the Tengger Desert.  As well as his first desert crossing experience (Simpson Desert in 1991), these challenges have taught Lawrence to be humble, to respect nature and most importantly how to effectively work with others.


Mr Lau was one of the founding members and served as the 2nd term President of the CPA Australia Shanghai branch.  He is an early advocate of “Finance-Business Partnership” and was elected as Chairman of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) committee in CPA (Aust) Shanghai in 2007.  He is active in the Australian business community in China and served as the Honorary Advisor to the board of AustCham Shanghai between 2010 and 2013.  In recognition of his contributions to the accounting profession, he received the inaugural Australia China Alumni Award for Banking and Finance in 2009.


He currently sits on the USQ Alumni Advisory Board and actively participates in the alumni network in China.  He also established the first Deakin University Alumni chapter in China in 2012 and served as its President for 3 years.
