June Greetings

ACAA 六月祝语

Since the ACAA Connect was launched, we have seen a large increase in alumni members as well as growth in every university group. We have also received lots of useful feedback that is helping us improve our platform and its functionality. The ACAA aims to be the premier Australian university alumni engagement platform in China.

The ACAA has supported alumni events for the University of Technology, Sydney in Beijing and Shanghai and has co-hosted an alumni event with RMIT University.

The nomination of 2016 ACAA/IELTS Australia China Alumni Awards will open on the 6th July. This provides sufficient time for our partner universities to nominate and inform their alumni.

The ACAA welcomes three new staff members: Klaus Carl, Director of Development and Communication, Ellen Chen, Manager of Communication and Development in Shanghai; Mesa Chen, Manager of Communication and Development in Guangzhou.

We also say farewell to Bixia Liang, Manager of Media and Events. We thank Bixia for her contribution in setting up the ACAA upgrade website and the ACAA Connect Platform and her passion and professional event management skills. Bixia has decided to return to Australia and pursue her master degree.

In July, the ACAA in Guangzhou will have a small event to launch the China Chapter of University of Canberra. The ACAA are also developing career development events in Guangzhou and Shanghai in August.

HE. Jan Adams

Monash University alumna

Ms Jan Adams is Australia’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China and took up her appointment in February 2016. As Ambassador, she has the privilege of overseeing the very broad and fast-growing relationship between Australia and China.

Ms Adams is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.  She was appointed Deputy Secretary in April 2013 with responsibility for trade and economic issues.  In this role she was chief negotiator overseeing conclusion of Free Trade Agreements with China, Korea and Japan.  Previously, Ms Adams was First Assistant Secretary, Free Trade Agreement Division.

Ms Adams served as Ambassador for the Environment and Ambassador for Climate Change between 2005 and 2008, and as Minister Counsellor (Trade) in Washington from 2000 to 2004.

From 1993 to 1996, Ms Adams worked as an Adviser to the Minister for Trade and Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Senator Peter Cook. She also previously worked in the OECD Environment and Trade Directorates in Paris.

Ms Adams joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1999 as Assistant Secretary, APEC Branch.

Ms Adams was awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) in 2007 for outstanding public service in pursuing Australia's international objectives on trade and the environment.  In 2016 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to international relations through the advancement of Australia's diplomatic and free trade relationships, particularly with the United States of America, South Korea, Japan and China.

Raised in country Victoria (Wodonga), Ms Adams enjoyed water-skiing and snow-skiing. More recently she now enjoys discovering Beijing, reading books and travelling. What she enjoys the most about living and working in China is that she meets many interesting people and promotes closer ties. She sees a lot of great entrepreneurs and remarkable people involved in cultural, scientific, educational and other activities.

Ms Adams holds Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and Bachelor of Law (Hons) degrees from Monash University, and is married with one child. She says she loved her time at Monash University as it set the path for her professional career in international policy and feels her greatest achievement to date has been overseeing Australia’s trade agreements with China, Japan and Korea.
