The discussion ranged from talent development in Guangzhou to how to fully realise the benefits of Australian education to experiences on starting one's own business.

VU - China Partnership Receives Government Praise

Federal Tourism and International Education Minister, Senator Richard Colbeck, has commended Victoria University's 17-year partnership with China's Liaoning University at a high-level meeting this week at Liaoning University, attended by senior education and business officials from Australia and China.

Part of Australia's largest-ever trade mission – Australia Week in China 2016 – Minister Colbeck met with senior officials and leaders from Liaoning University and the transnational education (TNE) team from VU College, Victoria University's international delivery arm, in April to deepen the educational exchange, coordination and cooperation between Asia and Australia.

September Greetings

ACAA 九月祝语

September brings us the beautiful autumn weather. We celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival, when family and friends all gather together to enjoy the moonlit night.

In this month, we saw great engagement at ACAA-supported alumni events launched by La Trobe University and Griffith University across different cities in China. ACAA organised the Alumni Forum in Guangzhou on the topic of "How China-based Alumni Can Develop Their Career". There was a lively discussion following presentations from selected speakers on talent development and entrepreneurship.

For the 8th Australia China Alumni Awards, we have received plenty of nominations from all levels of industry. Our distinguished Judging Panel has reviewed all the profiles and has narrowed them down to the finalists for each award category.

ACAA Connect is a vital platform for alumni to seek important information about jobs and career development as well as to network and share their experiences of studying overseas or coming back to China.

Alumni Profile

Mr. Shane Ullman

University of Technology, Sydney

Shane studied a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics, combined with a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Studies at UTS.  He went on to complete his Honours in Applied Physics, finishing first in his class.  When he came to China, Shane put aside his knowledge of Physics and put his linguistic skills to use in learning Chinese.

Currently the Events Business Director at BI Worldwide China, his main role is conceiving and designing Incentive Travel programs for Fortune 500 companies. Companies in China are fiercely competitive in retaining staff, and Incentive Travel is one of the best ways to do this.

His International Studies degree gave Shane confidence and understanding of how to thrive in a foreign country, and as he enjoys a challenge, after graduation he decided to head for China.  Six months after moving to Shanghai he became the General Manager of Shanghai Insiders, a tour company operating in China, Morocco and Mexico.  With his passion for Chinese history and a rapid understanding of the language, he was able to share his passion with the thousands of clients that are beginning to discover the beauty of Shanghai.

Shane has been in China for four and a half years. The Incentive Travel business is extremely competitive in China, with government-backed competitors, but the business opportunities are even more apparent.

Shane tries to stay fit, and has joined the Suzhou Half Marathon and will join the Shanghai Marathon this October. Good luck Shane!
